Emerald Tablet
The Emerald Tablet (Tabula Smaragdina) is a short, cryptic text attributed to Hermes Trismegistus and prized in alchemy.
Established The earliest known versions are Arabic, including one in the Book of the Secret of Creation attributed to "Balinas" (a pseudo-Apollonius of Tyana), dated by scholars to around the eighth or ninth century. Latin translations circulated from the twelfth century.[1] Established Isaac Newton made an English translation, preserved in his alchemical papers (King's College, Cambridge, Keynes MS 28).[2] Tradition / belief Alchemists read its opening, often rendered "That which is below is like that which is above", as a key to the correspondence of heaven and earth.[3] Scholarly debate Whether the Arabic text draws on a lost Greek or Syriac original is debated.[4]
