Mithra rule
The Mithra rule is the Helian Way's principle that every exchange—of work, money, service or household duties—is agreed in full before it begins. It is named after Mithra, the Iranian god of the covenant.[1]
Doctrine
Tradition / belief "What is owed when one serves? Exactly what was agreed before the service began."[2] The rule applies to volunteer credits on the open ledger, to cooperative work, and to the Covenant (marriage), whose terms are agreed in writing beforehand.[3] Tradition / belief The rule is tied to the Founder's line "your sweat is your own, your blood is your own, your life is your own".[4] In a public talk he set agreed, professional terms against what he called a "favor system": "you always work in a favor system with your boyfriend, your mom or such. So it's not a professional relationship".[5] See No more secrets, no more favor.
Background
Established In Iranian religion Mithra means "contract" or "covenant". The Avestan Mihr Yasht (Yasht 10) praises Mithra as the god who watches over agreements and punishes the "contract-breaker".[6] See Zoroastrianism and Mithraic mysteries.
Evidence and critique
Established The Catechism notes that US law requires employee wages to be paid in money, so volunteer credits can be rewards but not a substitute for wages.[7]
